Busy Day in the studio

Woke up near 5 am and applied another layer of acrylic to the test painting.  The layer from the night before had dried.  My plan is to slowly build up a tint of color.
And I finished reading about Robert Delaunay ( 1885-1941)today who is one of the founders of the Cubism movement in art at the turn of the century.  He is nowhere as prolific as Picasso, and his life was relatively short.  His career startedin 1904 and lasted till 1938.  The last two years of his life he was ill.

He is best know for the painting titled "The City of Paris," which created something of a sensation at the time when it was exhibited at Salon des Independants in 1912.  This painting really became a launching point for his career.

Around the same time he completed "The Dardiff Team," ( 1912-1913).  The interweaving of various visual elements onto one plane may not seem very revolutionary today, because this painting has many of the elements you see in todays advertisement posters, however at the time this was quite a revolutionary way of representing the world.

Marry Go Round of Pigs is one of my personal favorites.

Cubism is not dead by any means, and in terms of artistic style, it is only about 110 years old right now, but it was far more popular in the first half of the century.  It was so revolutionary and different from the Classical style of painting at the time.

It would be very interesting to do a small study and see just who out there today is practicing cubism in their artistic styles.

Ummmm,, great idea of a blog study.

Enjoy.

  1. True dedication to your art is waking up at 5:00 am to work in your studio. :-) Impressionism will always be my favorite style, but I also admire many others, including cubism.
